Freeze Festival
2010

A festival in October? What next, snowboarding in London? Pack your gloves, scarf and glow sticks and say hello to the Relentless Freeze Festival.

This was the official website for the 2010 Freeze Festival held in London.
Content is from the site's 2010 archived pages.

What is Relentless Freeze Festival: Relentless Freeze Festival is where London, snow sports and music collide. Every year the world’s best snowboarders and skiers descend on Battersea Power Station to compete on a real snow ramp before some amazing music acts hit three stages for a banging party…

Is it a sports competition? Is it all the winter goodness with a blast of fun? All explained here!

Relentless Freeze is a snow sports and music festival in London, nestled in the shadow of Battersea Power Station. Every year since it began in 2008 Freeze has welcomed the world’s very best skiers and snowboarders to compete on the specially erected 32m high, 100m long real snow ramp.

The riders throw themselves off the huge jump performing their best tricks for World ranking points, their share of the prize purse, and your viewing pleasure. Over the last two years we have seen Olympic medalists Danny Kass, Peetu Piiroinen, Scotty Lago battle it out. From the skiers Jon Olson, Tanner Hall, Russ Henshaw, Andreas Hatveit and Bobby Brown produced an intense and one of the highest scoring big air contests ever!

The event takes place over three days in late October and boasts a stellar music line up. The last two years have seen huge international acts like Cypress Hill, Orbital, Friendly Fires and Chase & Status perform phenomenal shows in the festival marquee and expect more exciting acts this year. There is also a big retail village for you to explore, loads of specially decked out après ski bars, a cinema, food stalls and loads more stuff to check out.

Relentless Freeze is a totally unique London Festival experience.
I would beg to differ with that statement. Relentless Freeze festivals have been around since 2007. The first was in Austin Texas, US. Since then they have been held in the Netherlands (2 x's), Germany (3 x's), London (2 x's), and Seattle Washington- US. 2012 was the last year they were held which is a real shame. Interestingly, the actual last one was held in London again October 29-31, 2012. The line up included Pop, Electronic, Jazz, and Hip-Hop acts such as Public Enemy, Grandmaster Flash, Mark Ronson, DJ Shadow, Hungary Man, Stanton Warriors, DJ Ez, Astroid Boys, Zane Lowe, Wascal, and Spenghead.

I can hope that the producers of the Relentless Freeze festivals will once again start up again, but in the meantime I will just take a nostalgic peek at their 2010 London Relentless Freeze festival as it was presented on this website.

More Background On TheFreezeFestival.com

TheFreezeFestival.com was the official website of the Relentless Freeze Festival, one of the most ambitious and visually spectacular events ever staged in London. Combining world-class snowboarding and freestyle skiing competitions with major live music performances, retail exhibitions, winter culture, and festival entertainment, Freeze Festival transformed the industrial landscape surrounding Battersea Power Station into a temporary alpine playground.

For several years during the late 2000s and early 2010s, the festival became a landmark event on both the British action sports calendar and London's music festival scene. It attracted Olympic athletes, X Games competitors, internationally recognized musicians, sponsors, tourism organizations, equipment manufacturers, and thousands of spectators eager to experience a unique blend of winter sports and urban culture.

TheFreezeFestival.com served as the central information hub for attendees, athletes, exhibitors, media representatives, and sponsors, providing schedules, ticketing information, event details, competition announcements, music lineups, and exhibitor listings.

A Remarkable Concept

At its core, Freeze Festival was built around a simple but revolutionary idea: bring the mountains to the city.

Instead of requiring fans to travel to ski resorts in the Alps or North America, organizers constructed a massive real-snow ramp in central London and invited many of the world's best snowboarders and freestyle skiers to compete.

The result was extraordinary. Spectators could watch elite athletes perform aerial tricks normally seen only at mountain resorts while standing within sight of one of London's most famous landmarks.

This fusion of winter sports and city life helped Freeze Festival stand out from virtually every other sporting or music event in the United Kingdom.

The Birth of Freeze Festival

The London festival was part of a broader Freeze event concept that emerged during the rapid growth of snowboarding and freestyle skiing culture in the 2000s.

The first Freeze-branded events appeared before the London edition became established. Various Freeze festivals and Big Air competitions were held in multiple countries, helping develop a recognizable international brand centered around action sports, youth culture, music, and winter lifestyle experiences.

The London event officially debuted in 2008 and quickly gained attention from both sports media and mainstream press. The combination of elite competition and major music acts proved highly successful, leading to annual returns and increasingly ambitious programming.

By 2010, the festival had become one of the most anticipated events on the UK's winter sports calendar.

The Battersea Power Station Setting

Few venues could have delivered the same visual impact as Battersea Power Station.

At the time, the iconic structure remained largely undeveloped, creating a dramatic industrial backdrop for the festival. Its four towering chimneys became instantly recognizable elements in photographs, television broadcasts, and promotional materials.

The venue offered several advantages:

  • Central London location
  • Excellent public transportation access
  • Large open event space
  • Unique visual identity
  • Strong connection to London's cultural history

Many attendees considered the setting itself part of the attraction. Watching snowboarders launch into the air against the silhouette of Battersea Power Station created an unforgettable image that became synonymous with Freeze Festival.

The Famous Snow Ramp

The defining feature of every Freeze Festival was its enormous snow structure.

The ramp measured approximately:

  • 32 meters high
  • 100 meters long
  • Built using hundreds of tons of real snow

Constructing such a facility in central London required extensive engineering expertise, logistics planning, refrigeration systems, transportation coordination, and safety management.

For athletes, the jump represented a rare opportunity to compete in one of the most unusual environments in the sport.

For spectators, it provided a front-row view of elite-level snowboarding and skiing without leaving the city.

Elite Snowboarding Competition

One of the biggest attractions at Freeze Festival was the LG Snowboard FIS World Cup Big Air competition.

The event attracted many of the world's leading snowboarders, including Olympic medalists and internationally ranked competitors.

Athletes performed increasingly difficult tricks involving:

  • Multiple spins
  • Inverted rotations
  • Complex grabs
  • Technical combinations
  • High-risk landings

The competition carried significant prestige because it awarded international ranking points and prize money while exposing riders to large mainstream audiences.

Over the years, notable competitors included:

  • Peetu Piiroinen
  • Danny Kass
  • Scotty Lago
  • Stefan Gimpl
  • Numerous Olympic and X Games participants

The Big Air format was particularly popular because spectators could easily follow the action and appreciate the difficulty of the tricks.

International Freestyle Skiing

While snowboarding often received the most attention, Freeze Festival also became an important venue for freestyle skiing.

The International Freestyle Ski Big Air competition brought many of the sport's top athletes to London.

The event featured skiers performing:

  • Cork rotations
  • Double flips
  • Technical grabs
  • Advanced spin combinations
  • Progressive trick innovations

Athletes such as:

  • Russ Henshaw
  • Tanner Hall
  • Andreas Hatveit
  • Bobby Brown
  • Jon Olsson

helped elevate the competition into one of the premier urban freestyle skiing events of its era.

Their performances often generated some of the festival's most memorable moments.

Battle of Britain

Freeze Festival also supported domestic talent through the Battle of Britain competition.

This event gave emerging UK riders an opportunity to:

  • Compete before large audiences
  • Gain exposure
  • Test themselves against international standards
  • Earn qualification opportunities
  • Build professional careers

The competition helped strengthen the British snow sports community at a time when freestyle skiing and snowboarding were experiencing rapid growth throughout the country.

Music as an Equal Attraction

Although snow sports formed the foundation of the festival, music was equally important to its identity.

Freeze Festival was designed as a complete entertainment experience rather than a sporting event with incidental performances.

Each year featured major artists across genres including:

  • Electronic music
  • Hip-hop
  • Indie rock
  • Alternative rock
  • Drum and bass
  • Dance music

Past lineups included artists such as:

  • Cypress Hill
  • Orbital
  • Friendly Fires
  • Chase & Status
  • Eagles of Death Metal
  • Public Enemy
  • Mark Ronson
  • DJ Shadow
  • Grandmaster Flash

These performers attracted audiences who may have had little interest in snow sports but were drawn to the festival's broader entertainment offerings.

The combination created a uniquely diverse crowd.

The Relentless Energy Stage

The festival's partnership with Relentless Energy Drink extended beyond naming rights.

Relentless operated a dedicated stage featuring emerging and established artists associated with action sports and youth culture.

The brand's marketing slogan, "No Half Measures," aligned naturally with the high-energy atmosphere of snowboarding, skiing, and live music.

The stage became known for:

  • High-energy performances
  • Cutting-edge acts
  • Youth-oriented programming
  • Festival atmosphere
  • Late-day entertainment

The sponsorship helped provide financial support necessary for the event's ambitious production.

The Retail Village

One of Freeze Festival's most successful commercial components was its large retail and trade village.

The exhibition area allowed attendees to browse products, services, equipment, apparel, travel packages, and tourism opportunities connected to snow sports.

Exhibitors included:

  • Equipment manufacturers
  • Clothing companies
  • Travel operators
  • Ski resorts
  • Tour organizers
  • Accessory brands
  • Retailers

The village transformed the festival into a significant industry gathering as well as a public event.

Major Industry Participants

The festival attracted many respected names from the snow sports industry.

Participating organizations included:

  • The Snowboard Asylum
  • Snowboard Club UK
  • Salomon Snowboards
  • Bonfire Clothing
  • Electric Visual
  • Forcefield Body Armour
  • YES Snowboards
  • Sputnik Snowboard Shop
  • HardnutZ
  • Violate Clothing

These exhibitors used Freeze Festival to showcase new products before the winter season began.

For attendees, the event offered an opportunity to examine equipment firsthand, compare products, and often secure discounted purchases.

Travel and Tourism Promotion

A notable aspect of the festival was its role as a tourism marketplace.

Numerous travel organizations promoted:

  • Alpine ski holidays
  • Snowboard instructor courses
  • Resort destinations
  • Gap year programs
  • Seasonal employment opportunities

Participating companies included:

  • Ski Fix
  • Sunshine World Holidays
  • Basecamp Group
  • Peak Leaders
  • Ski le Gap
  • Aosta Valley tourism representatives

This transformed Freeze Festival into an unofficial launch event for the upcoming winter season.

Food, Drink, and Après-Ski Culture

Organizers worked hard to recreate the atmosphere of a mountain resort.

Throughout the site visitors found:

  • Winter-themed bars
  • Heated gathering areas
  • Food vendors
  • Social spaces
  • Lounge environments
  • Après-ski entertainment

The après-ski concept proved especially popular because it introduced traditional mountain resort culture to a London audience.

Many visitors attended as much for the atmosphere as for the competitions themselves.

Audience and Demographics

Freeze Festival appealed to an unusually broad audience.

Attendees included:

Snow Sports Enthusiasts

The core audience consisted of skiers, snowboarders, and winter sports fans eager to watch elite competition.

Music Fans

Many attendees came primarily for the live performances and festival atmosphere.

Young Adults

The festival's action sports culture resonated strongly with younger audiences interested in lifestyle experiences.

Families

The all-ages policy encouraged family attendance, introducing children to snow sports and outdoor recreation.

Industry Professionals

Retailers, resort operators, sponsors, and equipment manufacturers viewed Freeze Festival as a major networking opportunity.

Media Coverage

Freeze Festival received extensive media attention throughout its run.

Coverage appeared in:

  • Snowboarding magazines
  • Ski publications
  • Music media
  • National newspapers
  • Television broadcasts
  • Online sports outlets

The event's visual appeal made it particularly attractive to photographers and television producers.

Images of athletes performing tricks above central London became widely circulated promotional material for both the festival and the sports themselves.

Cultural Significance

The festival represented more than entertainment.

It demonstrated how urban environments could host traditionally rural or mountain-based activities.

Freeze Festival helped:

  • Introduce snow sports to new audiences
  • Increase visibility for freestyle skiing
  • Expand snowboard culture in the UK
  • Support youth participation
  • Create crossover between sports and music communities

For many British riders, attending Freeze Festival became a rite of passage.

Accessibility and Inclusiveness

The event emphasized accessibility.

Features included:

  • Family ticket options
  • Child pricing
  • Public transportation access
  • Disability accommodations
  • On-site medical services
  • Multiple entertainment options

This broad accessibility helped distinguish Freeze Festival from more exclusive sporting events.

Why People Loved Freeze Festival

Several factors contributed to its popularity:

Unique Setting

No other UK festival offered world-class snow sports in central London.

High-Caliber Athletes

Olympians, X Games competitors, and world-ranked athletes competed annually.

Strong Music Programming

The lineups rivaled many standalone music festivals.

Community Atmosphere

The event successfully united athletes, fans, brands, and newcomers.

Winter Excitement

Held just before the ski season, it generated excitement for the months ahead.

The Festival's Decline and Final Years

Despite its success and popularity, Freeze Festival eventually ceased operations.

The final editions occurred in the early 2010s, with London hosting one of the last major Freeze events.

Several factors likely contributed to the festival's disappearance:

  • Rising production costs
  • Sponsorship challenges
  • Economic pressures
  • Venue complexities
  • Changing event markets

Constructing and operating a temporary snow sports venue in central London was an extraordinarily expensive undertaking.

Although beloved by fans, the business model was difficult to sustain long term.

Legacy of TheFreezeFestival.com

Today, TheFreezeFestival.com serves as a reminder of a remarkable chapter in action sports history.

The website documented an event that successfully blended:

  • Snowboarding
  • Freestyle skiing
  • Music
  • Retail
  • Tourism
  • Youth culture
  • Urban entertainment

Few festivals have ever managed such a diverse combination of activities while maintaining authenticity within each community.

Freeze Festival proved that world-class winter sports could thrive in one of the world's largest cities and that audiences were eager for experiences that crossed traditional boundaries.

Although the snow ramp has long disappeared and the music stages have fallen silent, the festival remains fondly remembered by athletes, fans, industry professionals, and Londoners who witnessed one of the most creative event concepts of its generation. For many participants, Freeze Festival was not simply a sporting event or music festival—it was a celebration of an entire culture built around adventure, creativity, community, and the anticipation of winter.
